Geneve, Switzerland

In December 2023, Dr. Brockett, along with Program Assistants Alexia Phillips and Almas McConnell, and ISOW President Aman Khan, traveled to Geneva, Switzerland for the Global Refugee Forum. This forum, held every four years, is designed to aid in the implementation of objectives outlined by the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and stands as the world's largest gathering on refugee-related issues. It serves as a crucial platform that brings together various entities, including NGOs, Member States, and UN organizations, all working towards practical and sustainable solutions to empower refugees worldwide.

Participating institutions and organizations make pledges and contributions in diverse forms, aligning with the four objectives set by the GCR:

  1. Ease the pressure on host countries
  2. Enhance refugee self-reliance
  3. Expand access to third-country solutions
  4. Support conditions in countries of origin for return in safety and dignity.

During the trip, ISOW had the opportunity to meet with several organizations, including Mosaic, UNHCR, Duolingo, and WUSC. They provided updates on ISOW's recent activities, the number of scholars welcomed in the current year, and outlined future plans. Discussions also focused on potential avenues for growth in the coming years and how ISOW intends to achieve its goals.

The ISOW team attended numerous seminars addressing issues related to refugee education, aligning with the challenges that ISOW actively addresses. These sessions provided valuable insights on how to expand outreach among refugees. Additionally, ISOW shared its pledges for the upcoming years during these engagements.
