Meet the ISOW team traveling to Ottawa from April 7th to May 1st, united in their mission to advocate for students whose education has been disrupted by war and conflict. The profiles below highlight the individuals behind this journey and their shared commitment to driving meaningful change, and what they hope to gain from the trip.

Hello! I am Acacia, a fourth year Global Studies student at Laurier. I am looking forward to the opportunity to discuss ISOW with members of parliament, highlight the importance of ISOW and advocate for government support for ISOW. I appreciate this opportunity and look forward to representing ISOW in Ottawa.

As an International Education Studies student who is passionate about access, representation, and equity in education, International Students Overcoming War has provided me with a unique opportunity to explore the realities of these issues in real-world contexts. Through my experiences, I have been able to engage directly with diverse people, organizations and communities, deepening my understanding of how education is shaped by cultural, political and social factors. These experiences have also broadened my perspective on the field of education itself, showing me that meaningful impact and change extends far beyond the classroom. Through ISOW, I have come to understand how education intersects with migration, policy, and global advocacy, and how I can contribute outside the classroom through research, program development, and community-based work. This trip to Ottawa is another experience that will allow me to continue building these connections, engage with new perspectives, and further develop the knowledge and skills needed to support more equitable and inclusive education programs and systems.

My name is Nazillah Hassanzada, and I am an Afghan law graduate, educator, and women's rights advocate based in Canada.

I completed my law degree in Afghanistan and worked in both governmental and private sectors. In 2023, I began teaching English online to Afghan girls, providing free education to those who lost access to school, with support of a Canadian family.

In 2024, I was introduced to FTR and the International Students Overcoming War (ISOW) initiative, and in 2025, I moved to Canada and started working as ISOW's Assistant Director of Communication and started my qualifying year in global studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. This summer, I will begin my Master's in Global Justice, Religion, and Culture. I serve as the Director of International Scholarships and Vice President of ISOW, while continuing to teach Afghan girls through online education as a part of a women's online university based in London.

My goal is simple: to use education as a tool for empowerment, justice, and change. I would never have been able to get this far without ISOW and Laurier students and faculty members, and with their continued support, I know I can reach my goal. I'm really thankful for having this much opportunity and success in just one year.

Over the years, ISOW has welcomed a number of Scholars from various ethnic minority groups from Myanmar. Following our field visit to Bangladesh to understand the educational context for Rohingya applicants, ISOW took the opportunity to travel to Thailand in May 2025 after our conference in Japan, to gain an up to date perspective on the educational landscape for displaced Myanmar youth, given that our last visit to the region was in 2019.

The team consisting of Program Assistants Almas McConnell and Alexia Phillips and Faculty Advisor Dr. Gavin Brockett, traveled to Mae Sot; a small town located along the Thai Myanmar border that is home to a large diasporic community of Myanmar refugees and migrants. Mae Sot is marked by its porous border, through which people, culture, and goods move freely on a daily basis. Its population is largely from Myanmar. While this mobility facilitates community life and cross-border exchange, it also reveals the darker realities of the region: a local economy built on low-cost migrant labour and a border that is vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation.

In Mae Sot, there are a range of educational enterprises for Myanmar youth, most of which operate with the permission of the Thai government. ISOW visited three schools dedicated to providing General Educational Development (GED) training and testing in order to give Myanmar youth the hope of being able to apply to post-secondary education. Many of the students attending these schools cross over from Myanmar simply to access education at a time when conflict and violence make life in Myanmar very difficult.

Students must live on campus in dormitory-style accommodations funded through scholarships. Their primary goal is to complete the GED, which helps make up for Myanmar’s truncated high school system that ends at Grade 10 and ultimately gain admission to Thai universities. These GED programs serve as a critical bridge to higher education, especially for students whose formal schooling was disrupted by displacement.

Some of ISOW’s current Scholars from Myanmar have come through similar programs, and their stories often include aspirations to return to Myanmar as educators or to apply for additional competitive international scholarships. However, scholarship opportunities remain extremely limited. ISOW currently partners with Prospect Burma to offer one scholarship per year, but demand far exceeds availability. Additionally, the recent cuts to USAID funding have led to the cancelation of over 300 scholarships for Myanmar students seeking access to higher education in Southeast Asia.

This visit to Thailand offered a valuable contrast to our experiences in Bangladesh. While both regions host large, displaced populations from Myanmar, the educational models, access pathways, and structural supports available to refugee and migrant youth differ significantly. With these visits, ISOW now has a well-rounded understanding of educational contexts on both sides of Myanmar. These insights will directly inform how we design academic, and social supports for future Scholars from Myanmar and the broader region.

Students around the world spoke out against injustice, as seen in the powerful campus protests in solidarity with Gaza. They called on their institutions to address human rights concerns. Rather than waiting for governments or institutions to lead, many students stepped up to advocate for change.

The Unified Action for a Global Challenge: Empowering Student-led Solutions for the Human Right to Education workshop, which took place in Tokyo, Japan from April 25th to April 27th, 2025, embodied the spirit of this action. It brought together students from Canada, Japan, and South Korea—three countries with unique perspectives on the global refugee crisis. Together, they explored the role of Canadian students in building a program that provides refugee protection through education, while imagining how this approach could be applied in Japan and South Korea.

Armed with huge resources, universities and governments failed to meet the urgency of the global refugee crisis; students led the charge, challenging them to partner and maximize the impact of their shared commitment. The workshop empowered student delegates to realize the power of their social location to catalyze positive change. Students returned to their universities equipped with the motivation and knowledge necessary to create or strengthen student-led initiatives that will shape the future of refugee protection through education.

On Thursday, April 24, a special roundtable titled “Education Pathways for Burmese and Rohingya Refugees in Japan” was held at the University of Tokyo co-hosted by ISOW through Wilfrid Laurier University, Pathways Japan, and JICUF. This collaborative event, brought together over 40 participants including students and professionals with a deep interest in the Myanmar refugee crisis. Attendees represented a range of sectors—academia, NGOs, international agencies, and the private sector—and gathered to discuss the current challenges facing Burmese refugees along the Thai/Myanmar border and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

The event featured an opening presentation by Professor Emeritus Kei Nemoto of Sophia University, a longtime faculty member at ICU and an alumnus, who provided a comprehensive overview of Myanmar’s complex political, humanitarian, and social landscape. Insightful updates were also shared by UNHCR representatives based in Bangladesh and Takashi Kase from the Shanti Volunteer Association, a Japanese non-profit actively working in refugee camps on the Thai/Myanmar border.

Key barriers to post-secondary education for refugee youth were explored, including limited classroom space, lack of accreditation for learning centers, insufficient teaching staff and educational materials, and the legal status of many students. For Rohingya youth in particular, the issue of gender disparities in education access was also a major concern.

ISOW students delivered a presentation on Friday, April 25th. The session was followed by a reception hosted by International Christian University (ICU). The session began with some welcoming remarks from Mark Williams (Vice President of International Christian University). Followed by the ISOW team presentation delivered in two main parts. The opening 30 minutes featured a formal presentation by ISOW's student leadership team, including KZP (President), Sharmaine (Vice-President), Jaron (Vice-President & Director of Scholar Support), and Anika (Director of Finance), with the session moderated by Erica (Director of Finance). During this segment, the student team introduced ISOW, explaining its mission, structure, and how it operates within the university as a student club. They also covered several key components of ISOW, including refugee and at-risk students’ access to higher education, ISOW’s scholar selection process, its sustainable fundraising model, and the experiential learning and professional development opportunities it offers to Laurier students.

After the formal presentation, participants engaged in small-group breakout sessions facilitated by other ISOW student leaders. In these groups, attendees had the opportunity to hear personal stories, reflections, and insights from the student leaders involved in ISOW. These conversations provided a deeper understanding of ISOW’s impact and allowed for questions from the audience to enable interactive discussions.

As demonstrated by student movements worldwide, meaningful change often began at the grassroots level. However, transformational change required strong partnerships. The workshop began with a panel on Understanding the Need for University Engagement, which examined how students could partner with their universities to increase the impact of their efforts. Students then had the unique opportunity to hear from Mr. Enrique Piñeyro, an Argentinian businessman who had recently invested his wealth in Solidaire. Mr. Piñeyro shared some of his experiences overcoming obstacles in the delivery of humanitarian aid in some of the most complicated situations in the world. This inspirational session motivated students to take lessons learned from the workshop and transform them into meaningful action.

From there, students transitioned into a collaborative problem-solving session, where they identified next steps for their own program’s development by discussing potential challenges and possible solutions. It was here that the power of community and collective action came to the forefront, as students identified opportunities for organizational growth. The workshop then guided students through the process of making a compelling case for why universities should prioritize humanitarian action. It equipped them with the tools to advocate effectively and engage with key stakeholders. The workshop culminated with students working in university-based groups, where they outlined concrete next steps for collaboration and implementation, ensuring they left the workshop with a clear plan to advance their initiatives. Students left with more than just knowledge: they gained a renewed sense of purpose and the strength that came from discovering a new international network to champion their initiatives. The connections they built, the strategies they refined, and the lessons they learned empowered them to lead the way in advocating for refugee rights through humanitarian action. The leaders of tomorrow demanded a brighter future, and this workshop was a step in equipping them to drive the change needed to create a more just and compassionate world.

From April 29 to May 3, 2024, ISOW embarked on an advocacy trip to Ottawa to further our mission of supporting refugee and at-risk students. Our team of passionate and dedicated student leaders proposed a formal partnership between ISOW and the Federal Government, envisioning a future where our commitment to using education to provide protection and opportunity to deserving young people worldwide is extended and amplified. Higher Education institutions are home to socially conscious active staff and students. Still, it remains challenging for leaders to commit the resources necessary to build programs that protect access to education. ISOW has been actively engaging with the Federal Government of Canada since 2017 to explore how this model might be developed at other universities to provide a nationwide complementary education pathway that complements the Government’s existing commitment to promote private sponsorship of refugees. This blog post summarizes our activities, key learnings, and meetings with influential policymakers and organizations.

ISOW is raising funds from within the university and through partnerships with NGOs to meet these commitments. We asked that the Federal Government join us by allocating additional resettlement funds and by granting exemptions from specific requirements related to the student visa and study permit.

           2. Requested that IRCC grant relief to ISOW scholars from the requirement to provide biometrics, to complete their medical exam before travelling to Canada, and from the requirement that they prove that they will return to their home country upon completion of studies.

           1. In addition to funds already committed to refugee resettlement, IRCC commits to providing additional resettlement assistance funds to support each ISOW scholar who will be resettled in Canada through a complementary pathway.

Throughout our engagements, we gained valuable insights into the following areas:

We learned about the different capacities of work between IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) and GAC (Global Affairs Canada). While IRCC focuses on immigration processes, including visa and resettlement logistics, GAC handles broader international relations and development aid, such as funding and strategic international partnerships.

Building partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations is essential. Collaboration allows us to share expertise and make the program more impactful.

We had the privilege of meeting with a diverse group of individuals, including regular staff, elected officials, senators, bureaucrats, and senior staff. These meetings were not just informative, but also provided actionable steps for progress, underlining the significant role each individual played in our advocacy efforts.

The 2024 Ottawa advocacy trip was a transformative experience, equipping us with the tools and connections necessary to advance our mission. As our fifth trip to Ottawa advocating on behalf of refugees and students at risk due to violence, we seek limited engagement in ways that align with existing government commitments and programs. Our government has always been committed to compassionate responses to humanitarian crises through creative and effective measures. A pilot program in the form of a partnership with ISOW holds immense potential for Canada to significantly increase access to refugee and at-risk students worldwide. This partnership can help the Canadian government fulfill its public commitment to complementary pathways and support humanitarian responses to students in need, inspiring hope for a brighter future.

Our ISOW team will embark on a journey to Ottawa, driven by a shared passion for supporting international students who have overcome war and conflict. As we prepared for this significant trip, we posed fundamental questions to all team members: Why is ISOW important? And why are we going to Ottawa? What would we like to learn from this trip?

ISOW is an important program that provides protection through education to students affected by conflict, war, and displacement. Through this initiative, refugees (Scholars) and at-risk students (Scholars) gain access to a safe and secure environment where they can continue their education. By providing scholarships and comprehensive support systems, ISOW empowers all its Scholars to pursue their academic and personal goals despite the challenges they face from conflict and violence. As a unique student-led initiative, ISOW showcases the potential of young people to drive meaningful change through education. Its influence extends beyond academic success, promoting global citizenship, cultural exchange and personal growth. The ISOW initiative is able to foster a highly supportive community for Scholars and student leaders, creating lasting connections.

Having been a part of ISOW for over 2.5 years, I am eagerly looking forward to my first visit to Ottawa. My primary goal is to gain a deeper understanding of Canadian politics and establish connections with government staff to further our mission. This experience will enable me to advocate for ISOW's cause, collaborate with fellow students, and enhance my comprehension of political processes, strengthening my ability to advocate for the mission and work that ISOW does. It is a great honour and privilege to be able to represent ISOW in Ottawa. This visit is a unique opportunity to lobby for government funding and support, crucial for current and future scholars to access and continue their educational opportunities. I see this trip as a convergence of my personal and academic goals, a chance to deepen my understanding of advocacy to the Canadian Government and a platform to contribute to meaningful change for ISOW and its scholars. I look forward to gaining practical knowledge and establishing lasting relationships that will benefit our organization and the individuals we support.

The significance of ISOW cannot be overstated, particularly in the current global political landscape. It is important to me as it serves as a beacon of hope. Aside from this, ISOW provides a platform for individuals driven by a shared commitment to humanitarianism and effecting positive change. It affords students a valuable opportunity to engage meaningfully and have their voices heard. The potential of students to enact transformative outcomes when empowered is endless. ISOW, therefore, not only stands as an impressive organization, but also a remarkable community, one in which I am deeply privileged to be a part of.

We are going to Ottawa with the primary objective of advocating directly to the federal government for support of our program. Having previously partaken in a similar trip two years ago, I am acutely aware of the invaluable information we learn on trips like these. Engaging in advocacy on behalf of ISOW is a unique and enriching opportunity for me. While ISOW has been capable of incredible things, I am eager to explore the untapped potential that could be realized with governmental support. This upcoming trip presents an opportunity for not only advancing our program’s objectives, but also for deepening our understanding of its broader implications and possibilities.

ISOW is important to me because it allowed me to engage with a handful of other students who were all passionate about the same thing: humanitarian work. I joined in my 2nd year and have learned so much over the past three years, taking on different roles within different portfolios and navigating my role as ISOW president this last year. ISOW allowed me to develop my leadership and public speaking skills, all while doing hands-on work and making a difference. It has opened me up to many different opportunities and interests and has been the highlight of my university experience. ISOW allows students to do meaningful work and take on responsibility, all contributing towards personal growth. I value my experience with the organization immensely and feel so grateful to have had such an opportunity. Being ISOW president has taught me much about my future and the field I want to work in.

Going to Ottawa is an opportunity to engage with the federal government and tell them about the work ISOW has been doing for the past two years. During these trips, I am able to learn so much from my team and the people we meet with and talk to them about the work I have been doing as president for the past year and why ISOW is so valued. It is a chance to show the federal government why ISOW responds the way it does, what our main prerogative is, and where our focus lies. Such engagement allows us to hone our public speaking skills and learn about what it's like to engage with the federal government and what goes on behind the scenes. As president, I have been working closely with the team over the past year to finalize partnerships, expand our reach and capacity and respond to more conflicts around the world. Going to Ottawa is an opportunity to engage with the team on such topics, and present it to the federal government, emphasizing why ISOW is such an important organization.

ISOW is important because as an idealist organization seeks to make the world better and more peaceful through education that brings development and economic prosperity. In addition, given the rise of conflicts around the world and the fact that governments and international agencies struggling with the overwhelming burden of humanitarian crises, ISOW is also constantly seeking support from the Federal government to expand its capacities and to provide more humanitarian assistance to reality on the ground so that ISOW will be able to act as a complement platform to share such burden by equipping domestic students with real-world experiences.

We will be going to Ottawa from April 29th to May 3rd to deliver tailored pitches to ministers, MPs, and Senators who have expressed interest in ISOW during previous meetings. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, we've developed specific pitches for topics such as Gaza, Afghanistan, Rohingya people, and the ConnectU program. Each pitch addresses unique requests for government action. During this trip, I aim to enhance my skills in professional pitch delivery and communication with government officials. I also seek to gain insights into Canada's global commitments, their implementation strategies, the functioning of the government, and ISOW's role within Canadian society at large.

International Students Overcoming War is a unique and only program across Canada that is ran and funded by students. Students and ISOW staff are learning and growing together every day. ISOW is not only helping refugee youths to get higher education at Laurier, especially girls, which is also not possible in their own countries due to conflict, cultural barriers, lack of financial support, early marriage, domestic violence and much more. At the same time opening door for hope, brighter future, saving lives, settling refugees and giving them a long-term solution. ISOW’s commitment to bring and giving scholarship to eight Afghan, eight Rohingya female next four years, ISOW will be trying to bring Palestinian (Gaza) female scholar is such a great gift for whole community because if they are educated, they will be strong enough to advocate for themselves and other vulnerable people.

ISOW and I are going to Ottawa to Request and building connection with Federal Government of Canada on certain topics like funding for new scholars' settlement, asking for international student visa issuing, permanent Residency, and Work permits after graduating. Funding for new bridging courses for refugees to access higher education. I will get a chance to meet government officials and politicians which will benefit me and give me a new experience, I am hoping to learn the federal government systems and policy and enjoy the trip with all ISOW scholars and staff. I will also get a chance to explore new places and environments apart from university studies. Just after finishing exams this trip will give us relaxation and we will have a fun time together with each other. I can’t thank the ISOW team, especially Dr. Brockett, for giving me this opportunity.

ISOW has been pivotal in my journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to studying in Canada. They not only facilitated my relocation but have also treated me like family, providing both academic and mental support. This holistic care has been essential in helping me adapt and succeed in a new educational and cultural environment. As a scholar, I value ISOW immensely for opening doors to higher education that once seemed unreachable, ensuring that I am not only academically equipped but also mentally and emotionally supported.

I am traveling to Ottawa to request funding and a humanitarian visa that will enable more young students from war-torn regions and refugee backgrounds to study in Canada. This trip is a critical opportunity to advocate for expanded educational opportunities. I aim to inspire and encourage the growth of initiatives that support refugee education, making a significant difference in the lives of many.

ISOW gives hope to students in war-torn areas and help them see life in a positive light. It is a shining example of turning ideas into reality, inspiring many of us, included myself, who aspire to engage in humanitarian efforts but often find it challenging to take action. ISOW's impact is profound, as it supports, and speaks up for the international students who have faced war and adversity, playing a vital role in promoting education, and peace.

We are going to Ottawa to advocate for international students who have overcome war and conflict, which is a crucial aspect of ISOW's work. Seeking support from the federal government can greatly enhance ISOW's impact and help more refugee and at-risk students. Through active participation in Ottawa and important meetings, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of ISOW’s current efforts.

ISOW is predominantly an organization led and funded by students dedicated to offering refugees, asylum-seekers, and international students affected by conflict the chance to study in Canada within a safe and secure environment. Education is a fundamental human right, yet, for many in war-torn regions, it remains out of reach due to instability, danger, and lack of resources. ISOW addresses this gap by providing scholarship opportunities for these individuals who are often among the most vulnerable. This scholarship does more than just facilitate academic attainment; it acts as a lifeline, offering a fresh start away from the adversities of war and conflict. For many recipients, it represents hope—an opportunity to rebuild their lives and aspire toward a future that seemed unattainable in their home countries. By pursuing higher education, these students can gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed professionally and personally, which is vital for their individual empowerment and independence. Moreover, ISOW enriches Canadian campuses by bringing diverse perspectives into classrooms and fostering a global community. This cultural exchange enhances the educational experience for all students by promoting understanding and cooperation across different backgrounds and experiences. In addition, the initiative exemplifies a practical application of humanitarian principles, demonstrating solidarity and support for global peace and understanding. Education is a powerful tool against inequality and injustice, and ISOW leverages this to help mediate the long-term impacts of war and displacement. Overall, the ISOW scholarship contributes substantially to the well-being of individuals and communities, advocating for peace, recovery, and resilience through education.

I see this trip as an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of government advocacy and fundraising activities and to understand the multifaceted approach required to manage and execute large-scale humanitarian and educational programs like the ISOW. My learning expectations from the trip are that this experience should further boost my knowledge of how we can get involved in advocacy and government engagement activities. Additionally, I hope this trip will provide me with the opportunity to experiential learning and develop my leadership and networking skills.

International Student Overcoming War (ISOW) is a vital initiative that addresses the needs of students who have faced the harrowing impact of conflict or war in their homelands. By providing educational opportunities and support systems, ISOW empowers these students to overcome the barriers they've encountered and pursue their academic and personal goals. This program plays a crucial role in fostering resilience, promoting diversity, and creating pathways for a brighter future for individuals who have endured significant challenges.

My trip to Ottawa presents a unique opportunity to immerse myself in discussions policy implementation in education. As a participant, I aim to gain a comprehensive understanding the insides of politics, policymakers, meet important officials and see how we will be able to achieve our objectives. Throughout the trip, I hope to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas, and identify innovative approaches to address the multifaceted challenges posed by my personal vulnerable status in Canada and the subjects that ISOW is working on. ISOW is important to me because of the fulfilling feeling that I am part of something so big and life-changing for students all around the world. To be a part of the initial selection, then watch as that student comes to Canada is an experience not many have the privilege to see, and I am fortunate that I can be part of the reason for helping a student pursue their dream degree and work towards their dream career. The heartwarming success stories make the challenging moments worth it, while I grow closer with the scholars and the team, and watch as everyone grows together. ISOW has given me the opportunities to make friendships of lifetimes and meet people who inspire me and my education, while allowing me to grow in ways I am forever grateful for. ISOW is important to me because it helps me to learn about cultures across the globe and relate to people through our traditional similarities.

I am going to Ottawa to advocate for the development of ISOW and the changes I would like to see as the club continues to evolve. In my last year, I want to know that I am doing everything that I can to fully support the organization and the causes I believe strongly in–this is one way I can do that. I would like to further learn about the importance of communication and unity between a team, while everyone’s support and dedication is needed for ISOW’s development in the future. I would like to learn about the thought process of the Members of Parliament and how different laws and policies are applied to ISOW through the Canadian legislative system. As someone with a strong passion for politics and law, I would like to further my understanding about the application of the governmental systems, how they are applied to ISOW, and the effects on the club in the future.

ISOW is incredibly important to me as a Somali Canadian born to parents who are civil war survivors for several reasons. Firstly, ISOW's mission of providing educational opportunities to vulnerable students in precarious situations aligns with my deep-rooted passion for helping people and promoting inclusivity. As someone with firsthand knowledge of the impact of conflict and displacement, ISOW's focus on empowering scholars through education resonates deeply with my experiences and values.Additionally, ISOW's emphasis on diversity and inclusion, specifically towards women, aligns with me as a woman and creates a welcoming environment where individuals in precarious situations from various backgrounds can come together, share experiences, and support one another. Furthermore, ISOW's support for scholars not only facilitates academic success but also contributes to personal growth and resilience. Being part of ISOW allows me to contribute meaningfully to a club that creates real impact, advocates for social justice, and helps to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, which helps us shape a more inclusive and equitable society.

My team and I are going to Ottawa to discuss with key stakeholders and government officials our organization and our need for funding and support for our scholars in ISOW. This trip is an opportunity for us to advocate for the financial assistance needed to continue our work in providing educational opportunities to our current and future scholars. During this trip, I hope to learn more about understanding the priorities and challenges faced by stakeholders in supporting ISOW and explore potential partnerships that can enhance our impact so we can bring more scholars from areas of conflict. I would like to learn how to communicate effectively with government officials, who are important actors that can support our cause at the governmental level. This trip to Ottawa is about building relationships, sharing our mission and successes, and advocating for the resources necessary to empower our scholars and make a positive difference in their lives.

ISOW provides critical educational opportunities to students from war-torn regions, allowing them to pursue higher education in the safe and supportive environment of Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. This opportunity is not just about academic advancement but also serves as a pathway to personal stability and growth, which might otherwise be unattainable in their home countries due to conflict and instability. ISOW fosters a sense of global citizenship and intercultural understanding among all students involved, whether international or local. By bringing students from diverse backgrounds together, it promotes a deeper understanding of global issues, particularly those related to conflict and displacement. This education extends beyond the classroom through ISOW’s various activities and events, which engage the broader university community in discussions about international conflicts and humanitarian issues. In essence, ISOW exemplifies a successful model of student-led initiative and enriches the educational environment by integrating real-world issues of war and peace into the academic and social fabric of the university community.

Through this engagement with Canadian government officials, I aim to understand the decision-making processes that influence government support for educational and humanitarian initiatives. My goal is to learn the key factors that persuade government officials to commit resources and support to programs like ISOW, which provides crucial educational opportunities to students from conflict regions. During my visit, I am particularly interested in discovering how ISOW’s pitch aligns with Canada’s humanitarian policies and priorities, such as the Feminist International Assistance Policy, and how these alignments can enhance our request’s effectiveness. I seek to observe firsthand the dynamics of policy advocacy meetings, the arguments and data points that resonate most with policymakers, and the challenges of navigating bureaucratic processes. This experience will not only deepen my understanding of governmental procedures but also equip me with the strategic knowledge required to effectively advocate for initiatives like ISOW in the future.

ISOW holds profound importance for numerous reasons. Firstly, it serves as a beacon of hope amidst adversity, offering a lifeline of education to students from conflict-affected regions. By providing scholarships, ISOW not only transforms individual lives but also inspires similar initiatives across universities, amplifying its impact on a broader scale. This pioneering project nurtures empathetic future leaders equipped to tackle complex global challenges, thereby fostering positive change at both national and international levels. Moreover, ISOW's commitment to prioritizing female education and leadership is particularly significant. In conflict-affected areas, where women often face heightened barriers to education and empowerment, ISOW's emphasis on female leadership becomes indispensable. By empowering women through education, ISOW contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty and conflict, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society. In essence, ISOW's multifaceted importance lies in its ability to not only provide educational opportunities but also in its capacity to instill values of empathy, leadership, and gender equality, thereby shaping a brighter future for generations to come.

The prospect of visiting Ottawa holds great excitement for me, driven by both personal and academic aspirations. As a student of political science, this trip presents a unique learning opportunity to engage directly with politicians and delve into the intricacies of policymaking. Unlike casual encounters, this experience promises authentic discussions on real issues, offering insights into the realities of political advocacy. Furthermore, I anticipate gaining firsthand exposure to the dynamics of policymaking and understanding the nuances of engaging with policymakers. This trip will provide invaluable lessons on the preparation, strategy, and execution required to effectively advocate for meaningful change. By immersing myself in the political landscape of Ottawa, I aim to acquire practical knowledge that will contribute to my future endeavours in advocacy and public service. Ultimately, my motivation to travel to Ottawa stems from a strong aspiration to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications. I am excited about the chance to acquire knowledge, participate, and make valuable contributions to discussions that influence the future of numerous individuals.

My country of Somalia has been unstable since 1991, plagued by civil war and unrest. I grew up in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya, near the border. Life at the refugee camp was tough, with crowded conditions, limited food, water and the constant threat of violence or death. I always knew education was my path to opportunities, security and a better life. I walked 1 hour each way every day from my refugee camp to school, motivated by my future. Unfortunately, my school only went up to high school and I had no money or resources for a post-secondary education, and so I went back to Mogadishu, Somalia. Just as my dream was fading, and the Somalia situation was horrific and panicking all the time, the security the bomb explosion and the life in Mogadishu was kind of nightmare and I had nowhere to go, many young people including me in Somalia and in the camp were not able to see any future ahead of them we just have to face that situation and to live in that survival mode. One of the days a miracle that I was not expecting had to come in my life after an incredible filmmaker that I met when I was in the camp connected me to an ISOW scholarship program (International Students Overcoming War). To get that scholarship was a miracle to me ISOW gave me the scholarship that I was not expected, I cannot mention in words how important ISOW is to me but all I can say is that ISOW changed my life, gave me security and peace, community, and made my dream a reality. I am forever grateful and now I have successfully completed my first year of Political Science, at Wilfred Laurier University and I am now safe here and living a bit of the life that I was always dreaming

I know the value of the ISOW program and scholarship because it saves me and has given me my future. My experience has been painful, but I know that this is the story of many other refugee women. It is because of this that I feel motivated to advocating for its funding, so that ISOW can support the futures of young women that come behind me. Right now, I know many bright women around the world, especially Afghanistan and Gaza do not have access to education because of conflict and the complex situation in their area. Since the aim of this trip is to ask fundraising from the government to support ISOW program so that as ISOW we can be able to save and to give scholarship from those young people who are suffering in those conflict areas particularly women and I am happy to participate this trip. I would like to get positive impact of our aim and hopeful we should get support from the government about this issue.

ISOW is crucial for providing access to higher education to individuals whose pursuit of learning is hindered by conflict and war in their home countries. By offering scholarships, ISOW empowers recipients to shape their futures positively, fostering personal growth and contributing to the betterment of their communities. Furthermore, the initiative exemplifies global solidarity, demonstrating compassion and support for those affected by conflict worldwide. Its student-led and student-funded nature showcases the power of grassroots activism and highlights the potential of young people to drive meaningful change. Ultimately, ISOW serves as a beacon of hope, promoting education as a pathway to peacebuilding and fostering cross-cultural understanding in a world often divided by conflict.

I am going to Ottawa with the ISOW team to advocate for students who are unable to pursue higher education in their home countries because of conflict and war, particularly those from Rohingya, Afghanistan, and Gaza. Additionally, this trip presents a valuable opportunity to seek the government's support, whether financial, logistical, or operational. What I am eagerly anticipating from this trip is learning how to secure governmental backing for our initiative, understanding the procedures and policies involved in implementing our proposals, and further advocating for the rights and opportunities of future ISOW Scholars. It also offers a chance to connect with Canadian government officials regarding our future objectives and to enhance our effectiveness in future meetings and advocacy endeavors, aiming to capture the government's attention and garner support for our cause.

ISOW plays a critical role in providing life-changing opportunities for refugees who are striving to continue their education amidst immense challenges. This is a cause I hold dear, not only because it reflects the compassionate values of our society, but also as someone whose family has an immigrant background, I understand the profound impact that support and opportunity can provide to those seeking a new life. Through education, ISOW empowers individuals, equipping them with the tools to build a better future for themselves and contribute positively to their new communities.

I am going to Ottawa to advocate for ISOW because I believe in the transformative power of education and the right for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, to access it. By pitching to the Members of Parliament, I hope that we can secure funding and support that will enable more students to overcome the barriers imposed by war and conflict. During this trip, I wish to learn more about the legislative process, understand better the intricacies of policymaking, and gain insights into how organizations can effectively partner with the government to create sustainable social impact. Furthermore, it's an opportunity to hone my advocacy skills, understand the power of civic engagement, and experience firsthand the impact of collective efforts in shaping public policy.

ISOW is important because it offers hope. It allows others to see a group of young, motivated individuals passionate about making education accessible to all. This simultaneously occurs with the message of helping fellow human beings overcome conflict and violence and the importance of bringing awareness to these global issues that we may not always know about or pay attention to in our daily lives. An initiative such as ISOW allows students in Canada to help other students within their own means. It also gives young individuals the understanding that it is possible to make a tangible difference even if you feel you cannot do so yourself, and there is strength in numbers. ISOW can draw people in and keep them around. Many ISOW leaders have come in and out of the organization over the years, and many have participated throughout their undergraduate studies or beyond into their graduate studies. We also actively gain the support of the Laurier student body. This large community keeps ISOW going and demonstrates people's belief in this cause. This offers hope that efforts such as ISOW will grow, help more people, emerge as advocacy groups, be heard, and governments will enact policies that reflect their values.

I have been around the organization of ISOW for about five years now and have witnessed how the organization has changed and is always doing something innovative. ISOW has done a couple of trips to Ottawa previously. On the last trip to Ottawa I attended with ISOW, I noticed the bureaucratic barriers to gaining awareness about access to education and anti-violence, or anything. This shows that there will not be much change without people making trips to Ottawa or doing other advocacy work. I am going to Ottawa to help represent ISOW because its values should be heard. Based on this, I would also like to see what response we can receive and what the next steps are. It can be challenging to gain support as lobbyists approach a federal government, and we are a group of young lobbyists who are early in their educational paths and careers. What is most important is that ISOW continuously makes an effort and tries. As previously mentioned, I have been involved in ISOW for quite some time. I have not been able to be involved in ISOW to the extent that I would like due to time restrictions and other responsibilities the past two years, but I have witnessed everything that fellow ISOW leaders do. They spend hours on outreach work, supporting scholars, engaging with the Laurier and outer communities, taking care of logistics surrounding events, hosting events, conducting research, gaining partnerships, doing classroom visits, participating in meetings and decision-making, and more. There is never a moment when these ISOW leaders do not make an effort and try. I am excited to see the advantage this brings for them and ISOW collectively in Ottawa. I want to learn more about current government policies and funding towards initiatives related to the values of ISOW from each of our discussions. What may also be holding governments back from improving access to education in Canada, for those from war torn countries and in general, to get a sense of what needs to be resolved.

ISOW pledges to offer scholarships to Afghan women, which allows them to pursue university education despite their restricted human rights under Taliban rule. Additionally, ISOW pledges scholarships to Rohingya students, allowing them to pursue higher education despite the restrictions on their freedom of movement, access to state education and civil service jobs under the military junta. The ISOW scholarship includes a continued support system after the student is resettled through group events and individual relationships through the Scholar Support Team. Studying in Canada also relieves the students from life in a conflict zone.

By hosting Model United Nations events with high schools within the Waterloo Region, ISOW takes its value of education into practice. It will be an opportunity to educate and inspire young thinkers who will be entering post-secondary academic institutions to take part in supporting education for refugees. This outreach and education are important for helping youth to be aware of, and understand, a complex issue that may not otherwise be discussed in their academic environments. Further, it will aid in removing any biases or stigma related to assisting refugees in our society today.

ISOW believes that youth are our future leaders. There will be a greater awareness and knowledge amongst youth regarding the educational needs of refugees and the role of academic institutions in global conflict. We hope that the high school students will feel confident to discuss this topic and ask questions. Ultimately, it will result in high school students feeling equipped to take action within their own communities.

By leveraging each other’s strengths, we aim to create a network that fosters mutual support, enabling both organizations to make a greater impact on the lives of refugee students.

In April 2022, ISOW took its third trip to Ottawa to present to the Canadian government its proposal for Canada’s Rapid Response Mechanism for Education in Emergencies (RRMEE). The RRMEE is intended to equip Canadian universities with the ability to respond to emergencies by providing displaced students the opportunity to continue their studies. Using the existing ISOW model, namely the components of student leadership, the student levy, and volunteering-tied-to-experiential learning, we proposed that the Federal Government leverage ISOW to enable other universities to develop similar humanitarian programs. ISOW students called on the Canadian Federal Government to pledge matching funding and expedite international student visas through a group pitch that introduced ISOW, shared Student Leader and Scholar experiences, and then proceeded to build a strong case for why Canada should rely on universities to fulfill several ministerial commitments through supporting the RRMEE. Our presentation was delivered to NGOs including the UNHCR, WUSC, and Universities Canada; Minister Omar Alghabra; Senators Ratna Omidvar, and Marty Deacon; bureaucrats from Global Affairs Canada and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC); and the Parliamentary Secretaries for IRCC, International Development, and Women and Gender Equality and Youth.

The 2022 ISOW trip to Ottawa was jam-packed with a balance of fun and formal events. From dinner with MP Bardish Chagger at the exclusive Parliamentary restaurant to touring Parliament Hill and meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, students filled their days with adventure - and food - in the culturally rich capital. As students traveled east from Waterloo to Ottawa, they stopped in Kingston to introduce Scholars to a bit of Canadian history. In Ottawa, students got a chance to go grocery shopping for the week-long stay in Airbnb's where they enjoyed preparing daily meals with housemates! While delivering daily presentations to MPs, Senators, and NGOs, ISOW students also attended an Ottawa Senators game, competed in a group scavenger hunt to find as many embassies as they could, participated in a pub night with MP Mike Morrice, MP Tim Louis, and MP Valarie Bradford, and enjoyed a Ramadan iftar with Minister Omar Alghabra.

With the feedback we received from these meetings, we learned that we need to be more specific in our request for matching funds, while beginning with modest goals . In the Summer of 2022, we revised our RRMEE proposal as a “pilot project” for a four-year program that asks for $4.9 million to double Laurier’s ability to provide scholarships and support ISOW’s partnership with 2 other universities to provide scholarships for students affected by conflict.

Our sincere thanks to Senator Peter Boehm who, as a supporter of the ISOW mission, took the time to meet with us and give sage advice as we prepared to visit Ottawa in April 2022. Senator Boehm helped us set up many meetings with Ottawa politicians and government staff - pushing our campaign amongst his colleagues before we even reached Ottawa. Thank you for your continued faith and support!

One of my first tasks when I joined the team was to design a summer social media strategy to guide Surgery 101’s summer social media activities. My daily tasks at Surgery 101 include daily community management of its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles, and reviewing and updating its newly created social media content calendar as necessary. I also work with another summer student with social media content production and to support her in updated branding efforts.

Were you able to apply what you have learn while with ISOW into your career post-graduation? If so, how?

For sure! My experience with ISOW as a student volunteer lead to different opportunities after graduation. One of them was a paid opportunity to promote ISOW’s Educators in Emergencies conference in March 2019 because of my proven track record as a Public Affairs volunteer. As the conference’s Lead Digital Marketing Strategist, I designed and executed a campaign strategy that included social media tactics and email marketing to promote the conference and encourage signups. I also designed the conference’s digital and print materials, including two conference posters and the event program.

This opportunity gave me the chance to put what I learned as a volunteer into further practice and with a new target audience. My experience leading the Educators in Emergencies conference communications strategy helped solidify my passion for digital marketing prior to starting the Digital Media Marketing program at George Brown College.

Why should students become involved in ISOW and volunteer their time as a busy university student?

On November 15th, 2019, ISOW orchestrated a captivating Middle Eastern Cultural Evening, offering participants an immersive experience in Middle Eastern culture through the exploration of food, dance, music, and art. The successful evening was a collaborative effort led by ISOW's events team and a dedicated group of ISOW scholars, drawing a crowd of approximately 180 people, including students, faculty members, and Syrian families from the Waterloo community.

This provided them with an opportunity to gain insight into the ISOW initiative, showcasing the community spirit and collaborative endeavors facilitated by ISOW.

Subsequently, attendees were treated to a live musical performance by a scholar, a captivating Dabke performance by the Levant Dabke group, and a photo gallery featuring pictures of ISOW scholars' hometowns. Guests also had the chance to learn the art of writing their names in Arabic. On March 7th, 2019, the ISOW interns and a planning committee, in collaboration with the Global Studies Student Association, organized our inaugural ISOW Day in the Concourse at Laurier. The day's purpose was to introduce ISOW to the student body and express gratitude for their $4 contributions to the ISOW Scholarship Fund each term.

The day-long event included a shawarma lunch and a musical performance by Dawud Wharnsby. Additionally, there was a poster display showcasing the partnership proposals of ISOW team members, which were prepared in an ISOW course. In the afternoon, local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) set up booths to raise awareness among students about the various organizations in the Kitchener-Waterloo community and how they could volunteer with them.

The event was highly successful, drawing approximately 300 attendees, including students, staff, faculty members, and even local MP Bardish Chagger. ISOW hopes for the students who participated in the event to be reminded of our gratitude for their ongoing contributions to our initiative and to witness the tangible impact that a $4 donation can have on the lives of international students from conflict-affected countries.

With support from Minister Bardish Chagger, Senator Peter Boehm, Laurier’s Faculty of Arts, Laurier International, the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union and many others, ISOW scholars and student leaders travelled to Parliament Hill over the winter reading week. The group engaged in discussions with the federal government around obtaining matching funds to provide scholarships for ISOW scholars.

In addition to meeting with Ministers Chagger, Bibeau and Hussen; Senators Boehm and Deacon; MPs O’Connell, Decourcy, and Algahbra; Senior Advisors to Ministers Hussen and Duncan; and staff rom IRCC and WUSC, the students had time to skate on the Rideau Canal, eat Beaver Tails, dine in the Parliamentary Dining Room, and fostering stronger team relationships.

This experience underscored that ISOW's program stands out from other scholarship initiatives. It is unique not only because it is student-led and student-funded but also because it offers emotional and community support to scholars beyond the confines of the classroom. ISOW plays a crucial role in helping the Canadian government achieve objectives outlined by Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees, Science, Women and Gender Equality, and International Development.

In late April, ten ISOW leaders and three ISOW Scholars traveled to Ottawa where they spent three days exploring the city, and learning about Canadian politics. Financed by a number of offices in the University, this trip was memorable for many reasons. All students were left in awe of the “un-Canadian” behavior of politicians during Question Period, while they were equally touched by the warm welcome extended by Bardish Chagger and Marwan Tabbara who generously gave of their time. We also had the privilege of meeting with MP Omar Alghabra (Mississauga Centre) and Senator Ratna Omidvar (Ontario), both of whom were very pleased to talk with us and to learn about ISOW. In each instance, ISOW Scholars and leaders together delivered superb short, carefully prepared presentations about ISOW that demonstrated just how effectively students can present information when they are invested in it and care about the purpose behind the presentation
