COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
ISOW’s mission includes engaging Laurier students on the impact of international conflicts to promote intercultural learning and globally engaged citizenship.
We hope that by hosting events that focus on the celebration of international cultures and the realities experienced by people who live in the midst of international conflict Laurier students and the broader community will develop deeper intercultural understanding.
Community Events
ISOW also grows with the support of the community. Thus, we invite the community to join us in our journey to enforce education as a powerful tool for social reproduction and to enhance our sense of international obligation as Canadians.

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan 2023 Symposium
On October 14th, 2023, Dr. Gavin Brockett, Meg Brockett, along with two of our scholars, Sadam and KZP, participated in the Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan Symposium: Her Right to Learn, Uniting for Afghan Women and Girls, held at McGill University in Montreal.
Marking its 25th year, the symposium brought together staff, volunteers, Afghan human rights defenders, partners, and dignitaries. ISOW, alongside other organizations and individuals, gained insights into the impactful work undertaken by Canadian Women for Afghan Women in Afghanistan, particularly in enhancing the living conditions of Afghan women, with a special emphasis on the education sector.
Moreover, Dr. Gavin Brockett, alongside other guests, actively contributed to the "Foraging Alternatives: How to Mobilize Canadian Higher Education Institutions in Support of Afghan Women" session. During this segment, he shared examples of ISOW's initiatives and highlighted the alternative methods employed to support Afghan women and other scholars in our community.
